The short definition
A lateral-thinking puzzle is a brain teaser you can't solve by grinding through the obvious steps. Instead of following a straight logical line, you have to approach the problem from the side โ question an assumption, reinterpret a word, or notice something the puzzle never told you to look at. The term was coined by psychologist Edward de Bono in 1967 to describe solving problems through an indirect, creative route rather than step-by-step deduction.
In a modern tricky puzzle game like Brain Twist, that translates into levels that look like a normal question but hide a twist.
