Scan 25 is a Schulte table: a 5ร5 grid of shuffled numbers that you tap in order from 1 to 25, against the clock. It has been used since the 1950s to measure visual search speed, and it has one counter-intuitive technique that cuts most people's time by a third.
The rules
Twenty-five numbers scattered in a 5ร5 grid. Tap 1, then 2, then 3, all the way to 25, as fast as you can. Tapping the wrong number costs you time.
The technique: stop looking
The instinct is to scan โ eyes sweeping the grid cell by cell, hunting for the next number. That's the slow way, and almost everybody does it at first.
The fast way is to fix your gaze near the centre of the grid and stop moving it. Let your peripheral vision do the finding. It feels wrong, and for the first few attempts you'll be worse โ then something clicks and numbers start appearing without you having searched for them.
The reason is that eye movements are expensive. Each saccade plus the fixation after it costs roughly 200โ300 ms, so a search that takes eight jumps costs two seconds regardless of how quickly you recognise the digit. Peripheral vision resolves digits poorly, but well enough for a large high-contrast numeral โ and it processes the whole grid at once instead of one cell at a time.
Two smaller gains: don't verify (once you've tapped, move on โ checking costs a fixation), and keep a soft focus rather than a hard stare, which widens the useful field.
What counts as a good time
For a 5ร5 grid, most people land between 35 and 60 seconds on a first attempt. Under 30 is solid. Under 20 is fast. Practised players get into the low teens.
Treat published averages sceptically, though โ screen size, grid size, whether you tap or click, and even your distance from the screen move the numbers a lot. Your own trend across a week is the only comparison that means anything.
