Echo: How Long a Sequence Can You Hold? ๐

Echo is Simon, essentially: tiles light up in a sequence, you repeat it, and each round adds one more step. It is also a fair approximation of the digit-span tasks psychologists use to probe working memory, which makes the point where you fail genuinely interesting.
The rules
Tiles flash in a sequence. Tap them back in the same order. Get it right and the next round adds a step. Get it wrong and the run ends.
Chunking: how to get past 7
You will not brute-force your way past about seven steps by trying harder. What works is chunking โ recoding several items as one.
Three approaches, in rough order of how well they hold up:
Spatial shapes. Don't remember "top-left, top-right, bottom-right" โ remember a shape. An L, a zigzag, a clockwise sweep. Three items become one, and a nine-step sequence becomes three shapes.
Rhythm. Group the sequence into beats: dum-dum-DUM, dum-DUM. Motor and auditory memory are separate from visual working memory, so this gives you a second channel rather than crowding the first.
Naming. Assign each tile a syllable and hold the sequence as a nonsense word. Effective, but it collapses fastest under pressure.
The reason chunking works isn't that your capacity grows โ it's that capacity is measured in chunks, and you get to decide how big a chunk is.
Why everyone stalls around the same place
Most people fail somewhere between 7 and 10 steps, and that's not a coincidence โ it's roughly where estimates of short-term memory span land. Miller's famous "seven, plus or minus two" from 1956 is the version everybody's heard; later work suggests the number for genuinely unchunkable items is closer to four.
Which is another way of saying: if you're getting past ten, you are definitely chunking, whether or not you noticed doing it.
